Tips On Storing Furniture In A Climate Controlled Storage Unit

A climate-controlled storage facility is popular because the temperature and humidity levels in the room are constant. These units have dehumidifiers, HVAC systems, and thermostats to ensure stored items aren't damaged. Before storing your furniture in a climate-controlled storage unit, here are some things you should do.

Clean the Furniture Pieces

Before you take your furniture to a storage unit, clean it thoroughly. You should clean it a few days beforehand to ensure it is dry and doesn't attract mold when you store it.

Clean plastic furniture with a mixture of warm water and soap. When cleaning wooden furniture, use a wood cleaner. For fabric items like couches, use upholstery cleaner. When cleaning, ensure you get rid of food remains and stains, so you don't attract pests.

If you aren't confident in cleaning your furniture, hire a professional cleaner. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Place Pallets on the Floor of the Storage Facility

In a storage unit, the floor can absorb moisture, and water can penetrate under the unit's door. Condensation can cause warping and attract mold.

To protect the legs of your furniture from damage, you shouldn't place your furniture directly on the ground. First, cover the floor of the climate-controlled storage unit with pallets and put a tarp on top. The tarp will prevent moisture from reaching your furniture.

Cover Your Furniture Surfaces

When storing furniture in a storage facility, you should cover it properly. The coverings protect the furniture from dust and airborne debris. These elements can lead to stains.

If you are storing breakable furniture items like a glass table, cover it with bubble wrap. However, for other types of furniture, bubble wrap and plastic coverings can trap moisture and cause cracks, rot, and mold. Therefore, for metal, upholstery, and wood, use drop cloths, sheets, or blankets. This will ensure air is circulating around the furniture.

When storing wood furniture, you should take additional measures to apply furniture polish. This prevents cracks. For metal furniture, apply some polish before storing them to keep them from oxidizing.

Take Your Furniture Apart

Dissembling furniture saves space not only in your moving truck but in the climate-controlled storage facility. Any furniture item that can be disassembled should be taken apart before keeping it in storage.

This also makes storage easier. It also prevents damage. Make sure you secure the bolts and screws of each furniture piece in a labeled bag. To rent a climatized self-storage unity, reach out to a business like Safe and Sound Self Storage
